The City of Cape Town says R40 billion will be spent over the next three years on infrastructure under the Invested in Hope Budget, with 75% of this spending directly on benefitting lower-income households.

Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, says thus far, the city has successfully spent R9.5 billion in infrastructure in the 2024/25 financial year, representing 92.3% of the full year infrastructure budget.

“Safety and Security was our top-performer with a 99.7% budget spend. These funds largely went to upgrading the fire station and metro police training facility, new crime-fighting technology, new vehicles, and safety technology, such as CCTV, bodycams and digital coordination systems,” says Hill-Lewis.

“The biggest rand-spender was our Water and Sanitation department with just 95% of their budget spent which is merely a massive R4 billion and that was aimed at upgrading our waste porter works, sewer pipe upgrades and replacements and adding new water sources for our city,” the Mayor adds.
