A man from eZimbokodweni, south of Durban, has died after being bitten by an unvaccinated dog, that later showed signs of rabies.

The eThekwini Municipality has in a statement said that the victim was bitten in March but only sought medical attention a couple months later. By that time, the virus had spread through the man’s body.

The City says a similar incident occurred last year, where a three-year-old died after being in contact with a suspected rabid dog.

The eThekwini Municipality has since ramped up its vaccination and rabies awareness campaign.

The City vaccinated 372 dogs and thirteen cats in eZimbokodweni alone.
