The Black Business Council has called for harsher sanctions against corrupt individuals in the country. This is in reaction to serious allegations that suspended Independent Development Trust (IDT) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tebogo Malaka sought to bribe journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh on allegations of corruption.
The incident allegedly took place just days after Malaka’s suspension, which followed a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) investigation.
The investigation revealed irregularities connected to IDT’s R836 million oxygen plants scandal.
Public Works and Infrastructure Minister Dean Macpherson will address the media on Thursday on the allegations.
The Black Business Council CEO, Kganki Matabane says the law must take its course.
“We’ve got a principled stand against corruption and it does not matter who commits corruption. The law must deal with those people very harshly. Corruption eats into the resources that are supposed to deliver services in the country. The IDT’s role is very, very critical. And so, if there is money disappearing from such institutions, it creates a problem in the country. So, whoever gets involved in corruption has to be dealt with harshly.”

Daily Maverick Investigative Journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh says a new exposé implicating Malaka will be released next Monday.
The publication has released exclusive video footage and audio clips from a meeting that Myburgh had with the CEO and her spokesperson.
Myburgh says the two offered him R60 000 to bury an investigation into an IDT contract.
