Suspected armed cattle rustlers have raided a Fulani settlement in Dutsen Mai village, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, carting away scores of cattle in a night attack.

According to a post on Wednesday by security analyst Zagazola Makama on X, the incident occurred around 10:00 p.m. on Monday and left residents in fear as the assailants, armed with sophisticated weapons, stormed the community and opened fire to disperse herders before herding away the stolen livestock.

A resident, Yusuf Abdullahi, told the police that the attackers struck without warning and disappeared into a nearby forest with the cattle.

The stolen livestock reportedly belong to prominent pastorialists in the area, including Ibrahim Abubakar, Musa Abubakar, and Usman Isiya.

Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA, alongside other security forces, launched a search operation on Tuesday morning following a distress call. They are said to have cordoned off adjoining bushes and possible hideouts in pursuit of the rustlers.

While the exact number of stolen animals is yet to be confirmed, eyewitnesses estimate the cattle to be in the dozens.

“This is not just theft; this is an attack on our way of life,” a relative of one of the victims said.

The Kaduna State Police Command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the culprits and recover the livestock.

“We are leaving no stone unturned. Our tactical teams are in the bush and the search is ongoing,” a senior police officer said, adding that local vigilantes and intelligence sources were assisting in the operation.
