A leading policy think tank within the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Progressive Research Initiative, PRI, has called on the ruling party to bring in fresh hands to lead it into the 2027 general elections.

In a statement signed by Dr Ali Ahmed and Dr Tersoo Aondona, the group expressed concern over reports suggesting that Senator Tanko Al-Makura and Chief Barnabas Gemade are being considered for top party positions.

While acknowledging their past contributions, the think tank stated that APC now needs leaders with new ideas, energy, and strong appeal to today’s voters.

According to PRI, both Al-Makura and Gemade may not reflect the digital-savvy, youth-friendly leadership style that the current political climate demands. It stressed that the party must move forward, not backward.

“This is a critical moment for the APC. We need leaders who understand modern political trends, can unite the party, and inspire a new generation of Nigerians,” the group stated.

PRI urged President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders to prioritise vision, competence, and innovation over political loyalty or past achievements.

They also warned that the 2027 elections will test APC’s internal strength and public image. The right leadership, they said, can make the difference.

“The APC must not look tired or out of touch. It must show Nigerians that it is ready for the future,” the statement added.

The group concluded by encouraging the party to embrace renewal and avoid recycling old names, adding that Nigeria’s political landscape is changing, and APC must change with it.
