African National Congress (ANC)’s first Deputy Secretary-General Nomvula Mokonyane says that the organisation will defend itself in court against former president Jacob Zuma.

Mokonyane’s comments follow the uMkhonto weSizwe Party’s (MKP) pronouncement today that former president Zuma has launched an application with the high court against President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC over his expulsion.

Zuma was expelled from the ANC last year after forming MKP in December 2023 resulting in the ANC losing its majority for the first time in 30 years.

Mokonyane was speaking at the 70th anniversary celebration of the Freedom Charter in Kliptown, Soweto today.

“And most importantly, we really want to be spared this thing that in every platform where we are, this former member becomes a subject. We are done with the former member. We are going to court to express our constitutional processes so that he, himself, can appreciate the will of the people of South Africa,” adds Mokonyane.

On this day, 26 June 1955, the Freedom Charter was adopted in Kliptown, Soweto, a bold declaration of the people’s hopes and demands for a free, just, and democratic South Africa.
