The African National Congress (ANC) says President Cyril Ramaphosa acted with courage by placing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on a leave of absence.
ANC Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri says the ANC is confident that a thorough probe will follow after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged that senior police officials, including Mchunu, had links to criminal syndicates and interfered with police operations.
Bhengu-Motsiri says, “We are confident that this will actually get us to the bottom of this. It is not everyone’s hit wonder. It is supposed to be a process that enables us to establish if we are safe and if the institutions linked to the police are operating above board, upholding the oath of office that these South Africans who are working have taken. You know the oath. So, we think that it is an important and responsible decision. The placing of Minister Mchunu on a leave of absence.”

Mkhwanazi’s allegations
uMkhonto weSizwe Party says Ramaphosa disregarded the allegations made by Mkhwanazi about the involvement of the judiciary in the infiltration of law enforcement agencies by criminal syndicates.
MKP Spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela says the Political Killings Task Team disbanded by Mchunu was effective.
Ndhlela says, “If you look at those political killings, there were 612 dockets, 436 arrested and charged, which demonstrates that this political killings task team has been effective.”
“General Mkhwanazi also then says that the judiciary is implicated but yet the President wants to involve the judiciary in forming this commission of inquiry. Commission of inquiry, which will then supposedly yield reports on an interim basis, Ad Hoc basis, and then later in six months, submit it to the speaker. This is a clear indication that this President is a political and constitutional delinquent,” He adds. – Additional reporting by Keneilwe Angelinah.
