The 11th Nelson Mandela Bay half-marathon will take place on Saturday in Gqeberha where over 2,000 runners are expected to compete.
The race has held the National Championship status for nine consecutive years and is open to the public as 90% of the participants are social runners.
Organiser, Mike Mbambani says there is over R500 million to be won in prizes.
“This half marathon has been regarded as the best half marathon on the African continent because you can’t run faster anywhere in African countries and there’s over half a million rand in prize money,” says Mbambani.
Some of the participants have expressed their excitement to be able to compete with runners from other countries.
“You know that is what’s absolutely amazing about these races. You are able to run with these amazing people from all over the continent and it’s cool to do that and for me I’m not testing myself against them but against my previous best,” says one of the runners.
“It gives us as local runners an opportunity to improve our personal best and the chance to compete with the best in the country, best in the world. So, it’s a good indication to see where we are at the moment, fitness wise,” says another runner.
