ActionSA will lead a protest outside the KwaZulu-Natal police headquarters in Durban today to demand urgent action on the deepening crisis in the criminal justice system.

This follows provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s allegations that senior South African Police Service officials, including Minister Senzo Mchunu, are corrupt, have ties with criminal syndicates and interfere in police operations.

The party’s provincial leader, Zwakele Mncwango, has criticised National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza for assigning three portfolio committees to investigate the matter.

Mncwango is adamant that there’s a strong case against Mchunu.

“I think the Speaker is also doing what (is) normally (done) by ANC leadership to shield each other, protect each other. Because at the end of the day, that process she is recommending is not going to bear any fruit. And I think the president must be brave enough. There’s enough information presented to suspend or remove the minister and more than that, the minister was live in a portfolio committee where he denied knowing some of these individuals and yesterday, he now admitted that actually he knows this person.”
