Five people, including a toddler, have been killed in a road accident in Bergville, in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.

Traffic authorities say the accident occurred after a driver lost control of his vehicle, causing it to collide with an oncoming car carrying seven occupants.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Sindi Msimang says five people died on the scene, and the three survivors were admitted to a local hospital.

“A fatal accident claimed five lives on P288 in the Bergville area. This accident was between two light motor vehicles, which was a Nissan Magnite with seven occupants, including the driver and a VW Polo with one occupant, which was the driver. Among the deceased, there was a toddler of the age between 3 and 4 years and a teenager between 14 years and 15 years. It is alleged that the Polo driver lost control and collided head-on with a Nissan Magnite. The other 3 passengers from the Nissan Magnite sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to hospital.”

Meanwhile, emergency workers are trying to rescue passengers of a vehicle that rolled down a cliff at KwaSwayimane in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands.

It’s believed the vehicle was driven by an elderly citizen who reportedly lost control of the wheel, veering off the road and rolling down a cliff.

It’s not clear how many passengers were in the vehicle during the incident.

Provincial Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says more than 30 people have died in road accidents across the province since the beginning of this month.

“The MEC is saddened by the accident that took place on Women’s Day involving a senior citizen and it is very unfortunate that a woman who was supposed to enjoy the celebration of Women’s Day got involved in this horrific accident. A car she was driving rolled down a cliff and we are interacting with the rescue team or unit, as well as other emergency personnel who are trying by all means to speed up the rescue operation.”
