The Uganda Embassy in Tehran has successfully coordinated the evacuation of two diplomatic staff and 42 Ugandan students to Turkey, following the outbreak of conflict between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the State of Israel, which began on 13th June 2025.

The evacuations were managed by the Embassy through the establishment of an Emergency Evacuation Coordination Centre in neighbouring Turkey. In collaboration with the Uganda Embassy in Ankara and under the guidance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Headquarters, Ugandans in Iran were registered for evacuation, land transport was arranged, and the Republic of Turkey was requested and agreed to issue visas on arrival to facilitate the emergency evacuation of affected Ugandans back home via Turkey.

The Emergency Evacuation Coordination Centre is being overseen by Ambassador Matata Twaha, Chargé d’Affaires a.i., assisted by Mr. Oscar J. Edule, Minister Counsellor, and Mr. Agaba Mark, Financial Attaché at the Uganda Embassy in Tehran. This centre will remain operational until all Ugandans in Iran have been safely repatriated.

The evacuated Ugandans were received at the Bargarzan border on Wednesday, 18th June 2025, by Mr. Julius Malinga, Second Secretary; Ms. Zainah Nabirye, Uganda Embassy in Tehran; and Mr. Mubarak Daka, Uganda Embassy in Ankara. They are currently being transferred to Istanbul, from where they are expected to return to Uganda aboard a commercial chartered aircraft.

Efforts are ongoing to register and coordinate the evacuation of other Ugandan nationals still in Iran, with the aim of safely guiding and supporting their return home. Families and individuals with information on Ugandans still in the Islamic Republic of Iran are encouraged to reach out to the following officers:
