The SA Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) in the North West has threatened strike action at the Rustenburg Local Municipality, should the municipality fail to upgrade salaries of their members to grade 7.

SAMWU demands that the municipality implement the 2010 council resolutions that directed that workers’ salaries, currently at grade 5, to be upgraded to grade 7.

The municipal workers were recently picketing but the municipality interdicted their demonstration.

“We requested the employer to come and tell us when it is going to pay us grade 7 salaries. Instead of addressing the workers, they decided to go to court and interdict our picketing. Our next action is that we have applied for a protected strike, and the workers are ready to go for a full-blown strike. Secondly, we have written a letter to the employer, we have requested a meeting next week Thursday at 2 o’clock so that the management and troika can come and tell the workers when they are going to pay them their grade 7 salaries,” says Bushy Mafora  SAMWU’s shop steward at the Rustenburg Local municipality.
