SADTU in the Free State has urged the provincial education department to invest more resources to support teachers.

This after the department launched the provincial Mother Tongue based Bilingual Education (MTbBE) campaign in the province.

The campaign aims to improve learners’ performance and promote linguistic diversity in primary schools.

Provincial secretary of SADTU, Bricks Moloi says with the introduction of home languages for teaching numeracy and other literacy subjects, teachers need training to be better capacitated for the transition.

Moloi has also called on parents to support the department.

“This is something as SADTU we have been advocating for, for a very long time. That learners will learn better and perform very well when they are taught in their mother tongue and finally the moment has arrived that our learners will now be able to comprehend whatever teachers provide to them. So that they can better perform in their lessons,” says Moloi.
