The DA in KwaZulu-Natal has demanded that the appointment of a new Chief Financial Officer at the provincial Education Department be reversed within five days.
DA member of the legislature, Sakhile Mngadi says if the MEC doesn’t act, they will escalate the matter to the Premier, Public Service Commission and the Public Protector.
This after Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka offered Yali Joyi the job in May pending her submission of certain documents.
Joyi resigned from the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance, where she held the same job, after being suspended last year pending an investigation into alleged irregular procurement and financial misconduct.
Mngadi says, “Her appointment violates the constitution, breaches public service regulations and reflects ongoing cadre protection instead of accountability. The Democratic Alliance is in possession of a signed letter from Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka instructing the Head of Department to finalise Joyi’s appointment, confirming the MEC’s direct involvement in the process.”
Teachers’ union NATU says the appointment of Joyi shows a lack of political will to uphold good governance and accountability.
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education Spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says the department will respond to the criticism at an appropriate time.
“The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal notes the sentiments as echoed by our stakeholders regarding the appointment of the new CFO, Miss Joyi. We will respond at an appropriate time,” says Mahlambi.
