The Public Servants Association (PSA) says it will intensify its protest action over unemployed doctors until all are hired by the KwaZulu-Natal Health Department.

Last week, protests erupted across the province due to the more than 150 doctors who still remain without jobs. The PSA says the government must stop making empty promises on healthcare reform while hospitals face staff shortages and graduates sit idle.

Mlungisi Ndlovu is the provincial manager of the PSA in KZN, “As PSA KwaZulu Natal, we support the strike of these unemployed doctors. The department has not yet specified the formula for the allocations but purely based on the population distributions, we believe that KZN should receive not less than 20% of the 1200 positions, so we’re not looking at less than 200. The minister has not specified for this position, and the MEC, when she was engaging with unemployed doctors, we are still waiting for the response. It is for this reason as PSA, we’re saying the minister must be able to intervene and the National Treasury must allocate funds so that positions can be advertised.”
