The management of Abia State University, Uturu, has said that the school is safe, peaceful, and conducive for students of the institution.

The University, which was reacting to the killing of Mr Osinachi Asonye, a motorcyclist, by gunmen on Friday, said that the shooting incident happened outside the University.

In a statement signed by Mr Chijioke Nwogu, its Public Relations Officer, Abia State University said that the reports claiming that the killing took place inside the University were false and targeted at portraying the University as unsafe.

The ABSU management, which condemned the killing of the commercial motorcyclist and other related crimes, lamented that false reports about the security situation around the school were aimed at demarketing the institution.

“The public should note that none of these reported incidents happened inside the University, as many false narratives try to portray, but mostly in bordering communities, a reflection of the general insecurity challenges in the country, which is not peculiar to the state or the University.

“Therefore, students are enjoined to go about their academic activities without fear, but should equally avoid traveling at night, and refrain from activities that may lead to quarrels and fights whose consequences no one can predict.”

Abia State University further said that government and security agencies have swung into action to apprehend those behind the shooting incident, adding that the safety of students has remained the top priority of Governor Alex Otti.
