United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the signing of a Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)-Rwanda peace agreement in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
The UN Chief called the agreement a significant step towards de-escalation, peace and stability in the Eastern DRC and the Great Lakes region.
Guterres also commended the United States for its leadership in facilitating this process, in coordination with the State of Qatar and the African Union mediator, Faure Gnassingbé of Togo.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the five co-facilitators designated by the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community.
The Secretary General urged the parties to honour in full the commitments they’d undertaken in the Peace Agreement and pursuant to the Security Council resolution passed in February that called on Rwanda to stop its support for the rebel M23 and to withdraw its troops from the country.
