Gauteng MEC of Finance and Economic Development Lebogang Maile says the provincial government will tomorrow make another payment towards servicing the e-toll historical debt.

Maile addressed the media in Johannesburg earlier today, to give an update on the province’s progress in repaying the debt.

This follows the decision made by government to scrap the e-toll system, following years of public opposition and concerns about its affordability and effectiveness.

He says the second payment due on Monday, is part of the province’s 30-percent contribution by the Gauteng government, which amounts to about R20-billion.

“The payment last year, was R3.8 billion, tomorrow we’ll be paying about R5.4 billion, and that R5.4  billion is divided into two. About R 2.099 is for the road maintenance, and R3-billion plus, is for the actual debt. The 20 billion that we’re paying, is made up of three things, firstly the debt was about R12.9 billion, and secondly the interest of over R3  billion, and then fourthly it was the maintenance of the roads which was R4.1 billion,” says Maile.
