Correctional Services authorities have conducted a prison raid at the Matatshe Correctional Centre in Thohoyandou, Limpopo. Officials confiscated drugs, more than 20 cellphones and various electronics during the operation held last night.
National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale led the correctional services guards and police in the search and seizure operation.
He says the raid is part of a broader effort to eradicate contraband from correctional facilities across the country.

“We were able to retrieve twenty-three cellphones with their accessories, meaning there was a router, also chargers and headphones. We also retrieved a smartwatch, so we are following up on it because a smartwatch means a lot in terms of its technical capacity when it comes to communication and network,” says Thobakgale.
He adds, “We also found a sizeable amount of dagga, showing that there is a flow of dagga in the management area to be packaged for selling.”
The operation is part of a national crackdown to ensure prisons are secure and free from illicit items that compromise safety and discipline.
