The Catholic Diocese of Makurdi in Benue State has issued a strong vote of confidence in the Bishop, Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe.

The diocese denounced a recent anonymous social media message allegedly calling for his removal.

This was contained in a statement on Friday by Sir Njie Andrew and Mr Samuel Kunde, on behalf of the Makurdi Catholic Diocesan Laity Council, MCDLC.

The faithful described the viral post as the work of “faceless mischief makers” intent on undermining the bishop’s authority at a time when he is leading humanitarian efforts amid violent herder attacks in Benue State.

According to them: “We are outraged that at a time when Fulani terrorists are killing our people and displacing thousands, some charismatics would stoop so low to spread vile and malicious falsehoods against Bishop Anagbe. This is not just irresponsible; it is evil.”

The faithful praised Bishop Anagbe’s vocal advocacy for victims of violence, describing his leadership as prophetic, unifying, and compassionate.

They stated that he remains a tireless worker who has achieved significant milestones in the diocese and continues to speak truth to power on matters of governance and security.

The statement read further: “The voice of Bishop Anagbe is the voice of the voiceless. We, the Catholic faithful of Makurdi Diocese, love him and are fully united behind his leadership. There are no divisions or frictions among us.”

MCDLC also warned politicians against using the Church for political gamesmanship, urging them to respect the distinction between spiritual leadership and political authority.

The group pledged unwavering support for Bishop Anagbe’s mission and vowed to resist any further attempts to discredit his leadership, particularly in view of his steadfast commitment to victims in IDP camps across the diocese.
