Three heavily armed suspects have been fatally shot in a shootout with members of the Tactical Response Team (TRT) at Nkawukazi village in Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape.

Police say their members were assisting a security company that was following up on a lead regarding a vehicle hijacked in Gauteng.

On approaching the house, the police were met with a hail of bullets from inside.

Three of the suspects were fatally wounded while two others managed to escape.

This is the second shootout between suspected criminals and the police in less than a week.

In total, nine suspects have died in the two shooting incidents.
