City of Johannesburg Junior Mayor, Kamogelo Malikane, has urged the Minister of Basic Education to urgently invest in quality early childhood learning.

Malikane was speaking at the three-day Learner Leadership Summit at the Johannesburg City Council.

Malikane says education should be the main item on the agenda. “We firmly believe that the future of our society is built in the earliest years of a child’s life. Early childhood learning is not merely a stage of learning; it’s the bedrock of cognitive, social and emotional development.”

Malikane adds, “If we are to raise generations that are resilient, literate and capable of lifelong learning, we need to invest urgently and in foundational learning systems. This means training quality educators, ensuring access to resources to every single child, particularly in marginalised communities and fostering an environment that nurtures curiosity from the beginning,” adds Malikane.
