The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has reported a decline in its membership for the 2024 financial year.
The union saw a 1% drop, with over 1,400 workers in the mining sector leaving its ranks.
NUM released a secretariat report detailing the organisation’s status since its last congress three years ago.
The report attributes the membership decline to a range of factors. These include retrenchments, dissatisfaction among some members, company restructuring, technological displacements, and fatalities within the mining sector.
Acting NUM General-Secretary, Mpho Phakedi addressed delegates gathered for the union’s 18th elective congress in Boksburg.
