URA Allegedly Closes Laventi Bar In Najjera Over Tax Fraud Claims

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has closed Laventi Lounge & Kitchen, a popular nightlife venue in Najjera, following allegations of tax evasion linked to fraudulent use of tax credentials.

The reports indicate that the  enforcement came after a tip-off from Mark, the bar’s former owner and current proprietor of Noni Vie Lounge in Kololo.

Mark reportedly alerted authorities upon discovering that Laventi was operating under his Tax Identification Number (TIN) without his consent.

Insiders say this revelation raised immediate concerns of tax fraud and prompted URA to take swift action. The premises were sealed off as investigations got underway, with officials looking to recover unpaid taxes and examine possible legal violations.

“It’s a serious matter when a business operates using someone else’s tax identity—it crosses both ethical and legal lines,” said a source close to the investigation.

Laventi had quickly risen in prominence within Kampala’s nightlife, hosting major events such as Najjera Fest and The Love Scotch Affair. Its abrupt closure is expected to ripple through the bar and lounge scene, especially among establishments that have changed ownership without updating their legal and tax documentation.

The incident has once again highlighted a recurring issue businesses continuing to operate under the tax profiles of former owners. URA has indicated that closing such loopholes is a key focus in its broader push for tax compliance.

While URA has not yet disclosed the specific tax arrears or potential penalties involved, sources suggest that criminal charges could follow, depending on the investigation’s findings.
