The Israel Defense Forces, IDF, has confirmed that one of its unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs, was shot down in western Iran early on Monday morning, amid escalating tensions in the region.
“During operational activity, an Air Force unmanned aerial vehicle was downed in Iran. There is no fear of information leaking,” the IDF said in a brief statement, without providing further details on the mission.
Iranian state media earlier reported that the drone was a Hermes model and was brought down over the Khorramabad area in Lorestan Province, a mountainous region in western Iran.
This marks the second reported downing of an Israeli Hermes drone in Iran in recent days. Last week, a Hermes 900 UAV was shot down near the Isfahan area, home to several Iranian military and nuclear sites.
The Hermes series drones, manufactured by Israeli defence company Elbit Systems, are used for high-altitude surveillance and intelligence-gathering missions.
